Therapeutic Reflexology
Therapeutic Reflexology works on energy meridians that run through the body. It is based on the principle that the entire body can be mapped onto the feet and hands. Reflexology treats by working specific reflex points on the palms and soles, which via the nervous system, stimulate the corresponding parts of the body. This releases and unblocks stagnant areas. Congestion within these zones can be felt in the feet, and treated accordingly.
Reflexology promotes relaxation and a sense of well-being in the body, by increasing blood circulation and assisting in increased nutrition of tissues. Through this and the close to 20,000 nerve endings in the feet, the whole body responds and starts to relax.
Reflexology works out of the paradigm that body/mind and emotions are interconnected – whereby the state of mind can be improved by treating the body and reciprocally. Reflexology is suitable for all ages.
During a foot reflexology treatment the patient remains fully clothed, with the exception of his/her socks. First the feet area gently washed with tea-tree wipes, whilst the soles are inspected for variations in temperature and moisture, any injury, fungus, or viral infections. If a viral infection, such as a verucca is present, the practitioner may apply plasters over the area to avoid spreading it further. The treatment can then begin and may vary from session to session, depending on the presenting symptoms. All treatments end with the application of footcream by massage.

There's language in her eye, her cheek, her lip;
Nay, her foot speaks.
William Shakespeare
Although reflexology during pregnancy (after the first trimester) is a non-invasive way to alleviate pain and discomfort, as well as encourage lymph drainage for swollen feet, it should be used with caution during pregnancy. Advice should also be sought if it is to be used on and with children. Only a qualified practitioner should treat.
